Oltrarno means over the Arno. In practice it is the quiet half of Firenze, a working neighbourhood of artisan workshops, small piazzas, and one big Renaissance palace (Palazzo Pitti). Ponte Vecchio is the way in, Santo Spirito is the evening square, and the Duomo is a ten-minute walk across the river. Best on a second visit, or on a first visit if you want mornings to yourself.
Who Oltrarno is for
- Return visitors who found the north side of the Arno too busy.
- Travellers who value morning quiet more than five extra minutes of walking.
- Anyone interested in workshops (leather, stone, framing, restoration) and Renaissance art beyond the Uffizi.
The character
Oltrarno splits into two: San Frediano to the west (younger, small bars, gentrifying) and Santo Spirito to the east (residential, restaurant-dense, Piazza Santo Spirito as the evening square). Via Maggio holds the antiquarians. Via del Presto di San Martino is a workshop street, four gilders and a framer inside 100 metres. Mornings are Florentine: caffe at 7:30, market at Piazza Santo Spirito on the second Sunday. Evenings are unhurried.
Getting there
- 14 min on foot from Santa Maria Novella station.
- 10 min to the Duomo (via Ponte Vecchio).
- 5 min to Palazzo Pitti.
- 8 min to the Uffizi (via Ponte Vecchio).

When to visit Oltrarno
Oltrarno is comfortable year-round because the streets are narrower and shadowed. September and May are the honest months. August is still 32-34C but the neighbourhood empties on the Ferragosto week, and Piazza Santo Spirito becomes almost residential.
